As a wedding photographer, one of my favorite parts of the day is capturing bridal portraits—those stunning, timeless images of you looking radiant in your wedding dress. These photos aren’t just about how you look, but how you feel—elegant, joyful, and completely in the moment.
Unlike engagement sessions or pre-wedding bridal portraits, the ones taken on your wedding day have a unique energy. You’re glowing with excitement, dressed to perfection, and filled with love. To make sure you get the best possible photos, here’s how to prepare for your bridal portraits during your wedding.
1. Schedule Time for Bridal Portraits in Your Wedding Timeline
A little planning goes a long way when it comes to capturing beautiful bridal portraits. I always recommend setting aside at least 15-20 minutes for solo shots of you in your dress. The best times for this are:
Right after getting dressed – When your makeup is fresh, and emotions are high. Personally, I don't love using the getting ready space for a majority of your photos because I'd rather use other spaces in your venue, but we will take a few here because it will be the moment you see yourself all put together for the first time :)
Before the ceremony – If you’re doing a first look or have extra time.
During golden hour – That dreamy, soft light just before sunset is unbeatable!
During reception downtime – If you want a few dramatic nighttime shots.
Your wedding timeline should allow for these moments without making you feel rushed. Work with your planner and photographer to find the perfect time.
2. Choose the Right Location
The setting for your bridal portraits plays a big role in how they turn out. Consider:
Your Getting-Ready Space – A well-lit room with clean, neutral backgrounds makes for beautiful pre-ceremony portraits.
Outdoor Spots – Gardens, courtyards, or any location with soft natural light can elevate your photos.
Inside the Venue – Grand staircases, elegant archways, or dramatic lighting can create stunning bridal portraits.
Don’t stress about finding the perfect spot—your photographer will know how to make any setting work beautifully!
3. Keep Your Getting-Ready Space Tidy
Your bridal suite will likely be buzzing with excitement, but a cluttered room can be distracting in photos. Designate a bridesmaid or family member to keep the space tidy—this way, your portraits will focus on you, not water bottles or makeup bags in the background.
4. Have Your Bridal Details Ready
Your dress is the star of the show, but your bridal portraits can also include meaningful details like:
Your veil (if you’re wearing one)
A bouquet for that extra pop of color and texture
Special jewelry or heirlooms
A beautiful robe for getting-ready portraits before changing into your dress
Having everything ready ensures we can move smoothly from one shot to the next!
5. Stay Relaxed & Enjoy the Moment
I know standing in front of the camera can feel nerve-wracking, but don’t worry—I’ll guide you through natural, flattering poses that highlight your beauty without feeling stiff or awkward.
To help you relax:
Take a deep breath and soak in the moment.
Move naturally soft twirls, delicate hand placements, and gentle walking shots all add elegance.
Think about your partner—imagine the look on their face when they see you!
6. Plan for Touch-Ups
Weddings are full of movement, and your makeup, hair, and dress may need a little refreshing before bridal portraits. Keep a small touch-up kit on hand with:
A compact mirror & blotting papers
Lipstick for quick reapplications
A small brush for fly-aways
A stain-remover pen (just in case!)
A quick check-in before your portraits will keep you looking flawless.
7. Trust Your Photographer & Have Fun!
You’ve spent months planning your wedding—now it’s time to enjoy it! Trust your photographer to capture you in the best light and guide you through natural, stunning poses. Bridal portraits should feel effortless, fun, and filled with joy.
Let's Wrap It Up
Your wedding day is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and your bridal portraits should reflect the magic of the moment. With a little preparation and the right mindset, you’ll walk away with breathtaking images that you’ll treasure forever.
