Choosing the Perfect Location for Your Photo Session

Whether it’s a family portrait, engagement shoot, or personal branding session, the backdrop plays a critical role in telling the story you want to capture. A maternity session in the Arizona woods in Pine, AZ.

As a photographer, one of the most important decisions I help clients make is choosing the perfect location for their photo session. Whether it’s a family portrait, engagement shoot, or personal branding session, the backdrop plays a critical role in telling the story you want to capture. But how do you choose the right setting? Here are a few things I recommend considering from both an aesthetic and practical point of view.

Your Personal Style and Vision

The first step in choosing the perfect location is to think about what kind of vibe you’re trying to achieve. Are you drawn to natural, organic settings like parks, gardens, or beaches (believe it or not, we do have a few not far from Phoenix!)? Or do you prefer something more urban, with the energy of a cityscape or interesting architectural elements? Your personality and style should guide this decision.

As a photographer, I always encourage clients to pick a place that feels meaningful to them. Whether it's a favorite park where your family spends time together, or a unique downtown street that fits your bold, artistic personality, the location should resonate with you. The more personal and authentic the setting, the more comfortable and confident you'll feel in front of the camera.

Lighting Considerations

One of the biggest factors that influences how a photo turns out is lighting, and this is heavily influenced by the location you choose. If you’re shooting outdoors, natural light will vary depending on the time of day, the season, and the type of environment. Golden hour—the hour just after sunrise or before sunset—offers soft, warm light that creates a dreamy, glowing effect.

When shooting in more urban or shaded locations, I always look for areas that provide natural reflectors, such as light-colored buildings or open spaces that bounce light back onto your face. If we’re indoors, I recommend spaces with plenty of large windows to take advantage of soft, diffused natural light.

Privacy and Comfort

How comfortable are you in front of a camera? If you're someone who feels shy or awkward being photographed in public spaces, it’s worth considering a more secluded location. Crowded city streets or popular tourist spots can add an element of stress, making it harder to relax and enjoy the session.

For more intimate or private moments, I often suggest locations like quiet parks, secluded desert areas, or even the comfort of your own home. These settings can allow you to be yourself and truly connect with your loved ones, creating more candid and natural photos.

Seasonal Considerations

Each season offers its own unique beauty, and it’s important to match the season with the location. For example, lush gardens or outdoor parks are perfect for spring and fall (in AZ!), while urban settings can work well year-round. In the fall, parks with vibrant foliage are ideal for capturing warm, golden tones. In winter, snow-covered landscapes or cozy indoor spaces with festive décor can add a magical touch.

I always advise clients to think about what season they love most and what colors they want in their photos. Do you dream of a session amidst blooming flowers, or is a cozy winter shoot with warm tones more your style?

Outfits and Location Coordination

Your choice of location should also work well with your outfits. I always recommend choosing complementary colors and tones, rather than matching too closely with the environment. If you’re shooting in a natural setting with lots of greenery, consider earthy tones, soft pastels, or neutrals to create harmony. I like to recommend earth tones for all of my sessions because it works best with my editing style :)

When we collaborate on styling, we’ll ensure that both your outfits and the location work together to create a cohesive look that aligns with your vision.

Logistics and Accessibility

Before finalizing any location, it's important to consider the logistics. Is the spot easy to access, especially if you're bringing young children, pets, or multiple outfit changes? How far is it from your home, and does it require any permits to shoot there?

I always do location scouting ahead of time and make sure to understand any restrictions, such as photography permits, parking, and the best areas within the location to shoot. Choosing a location that is convenient and accessible ensures a smoother, more enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Let’s Get Creative Together!

Don’t be afraid to think outside the box, but let's keep our planning easy. As a photographer, my goal is to create a space where you feel relaxed, inspired, and excited to capture your memories. With the right location, lighting, and preparation, we can create stunning images that truly reflect your personality and story.

If you’re ready to start planning your next photo session and need help choosing the perfect spot, feel free to reach out! I’d love to work with you to find the location that perfectly fits your vision.
